Regarding class and power in Corsica City, the classes are, in approximate order of influence:
* Duke and his offspring. His family exhibits the Luxury lifestyle.
* 5 most powerful political families. Old money, title, fiefdom (although the lord and vassal thing is not as rigid as it was a few centuries ago). Family members populate every power center in the City and three major Temples. The prominent members have the High or higher lifestyle.
* Foreigner Dignitaries. These are put in charge of various offices by the High Priest of the Greeks, to keep the culture Greek and not Celtic or Norse or, heavens forbid, Egyptian. They are often the kids of other dukes throughout Europe. There are relatively few of these positions and the posts are often terms of service rather than life positions.
* Celebrities. These represent very temporary but powerful individuals who hold no official power but hold the Duke's and commoner's opinions in sway. Faces change constantly but the power of the class of celebrities is highly influential. Corsica likes its Vestal Virgins, kooks, entertainers, gamblers, heroes, athletes and artists. They wield no formal power, often aren't rich, are only occasionally knighted but otherwise hold no title and their land ownership varies greatly. They mold the opinions of the masses and aid in the reputation of Corsica City as the vacation paradise of the wealthy, thus they have the Duke's ear. This is a local culture phenomenon and does not apply to most European cities. Again, Corsica City is different...
* Perhaps half a dozen additional powerful political families. Still old money, title and land but less of each than the main five families. Family members populate power centers in the City and the three major Temples, though not always at the same level as the big five. Their power is often greater in the province than in the city. The prominent members have the High or higher lifestyle.
* Crime families/thieves guilds. It is said there are two crime families, but they rarely clash "Chicago gangland" style because they've marked their territories. One is clearly the Patoknoi family. Another, if they exist, does not have a charismatic front man. They control the Stingray District for sure and dabble in many other underworld activities. The assassin's guild everyone speculates exists falls here too and is either directly or indirectly related to the crime families, but who knows for sure? The prominent members have the High or higher lifestyle.
* New money. Money is acquired through mercantile interests and mercenary activity, such as through the Holy Wars in the Middle East. Title comes from being knighted, but otherwise they have no long standing family title. Often they have as much money as higher classes. Land ownership at this level is limited to a house and yard, with all commercially zoned land belonging to those with title. Lower level City offices are often populated with new money. Their offspring are often taught at or join the major Temples. High level adventurers who have not done anything heroic lately, clerics of the three major Temples, and professors fall here. The prominent members have the High or higher lifestyle.
* Thesperians? They are a reputed mages' guild, but arcane magic is illegal, right? Since this is more of a legend than an actual group, how much influence do they have? If the Duke is one of them, then THEY are on top. The story goes that there are other magic using underworld organizations too.
* Middle Class. Guilds, merchants who don't own MANY ships, middle level adventurers, priests not of the three major Temples, experts, knights, celebrites whose stardom is fading. They have some money, rarely own land and almost never land within the city, may have title if they are knights but otherwise don't have title, and never occupy the high ranks of government. They often have the Medium lifestyle.
* Working Class. These are the City workers who have no management role, farmers, dock workers, sailors, barkeeps, and just about anyone else who has a job and earns a (more or less) fixed wage. Collectively they hold power through the purchases they make and what celebrities they worship, but each individual is easily replaced. They have few rights as citizens and little chance of evolving beyond their level. They are the most common citizens of Corsica. They often have the Low lifestyle.
* Slave and Servant Class. Slavery and indentured servitude is legal. Often these are immigrants who paid for boat fare by agreeing to a period of indenturement, members of society paying off a debt after losing a court case, life-long slaves taken from countries conquered by Greek society who are bought or traded on a market. This class actually has more rights as citizens than the working class, thanks to emancipation advocates. Their numbers are hard to calculate. They often work as domestic help for the wealthy, farming assistants on the ranches, rowers on ships, miners in the mountains, any job from which fleeing is improbable or leads to greater hardship than staying. They often have the Poor lifestyle.
* Street Rats. These are considered blight to society, but are all too common. They are often the unwanted offspring from prostitutes, beggars, half-breeds, released servants, low level members of the thieves' guilds who have yet to prove themselves. They often die of disease, accident, or by eventually being caught by the cops and swinging by the neck for their crimes. They often have the Destitute lifestyle.
