Description
|
Tholos is a human of moderate
build. His eyes are blue. His hair is
auburn and reaches down below the shoulders but Tholos commonly has it pulled
together and tied into a neat knot on the upper right side of the skull. He also has a bushy mustache. His skin has a healthy ruddy color. Although not extremely ugly, no one would considered him attractive. He appears neat but he smells a bit gamy. |

Personality
Traits
|
Tholos is very devoted to his
religion but is secretive about beliefs and religious practices. He is also more comfortable around common
people than around the nobility or bourgeoisie. |

Background
Tholos Barcad was born the only child
of humble yeoman parents, Ailein and Brigit Barcad, in the rugged hill country
near the village of Thogast, a rough and tumble frontier trading town at the
mouth of the Great Canyon in the Fallon Mountains. The rugged terrain of the area meant that the country was
sparsely populated and that individual families often isolated from their
nearest neighbors. In this environment
it was natural for young lads to learn nature craft and hunting skills. But in this environment danger also lurked
and could come from any quarter. When
Tholos was 14, his parents suddenly took ill with a painful but mysterious
disease and died within a few days. The
locals, being suspicious of anything unusual, believed that these were no
ordinary deaths but the work evil magic.
The use of “black magic” was an evil not tolerated by the community. Something had to be done. As it was, Dunstan Coll, the huntsman for
Lady Emilee (a local lord) and Marcella, a priest of the district, were passing
through the area. With their help, the
people traced the deed to an old woman from the adjacent valley who had
harbored ill willed towards the couple for many years. Frontier justice was simple, swift, and
cruel. In accordance with local custom
the old woman was burned at the stake as a “witch”.
Tholos had no close kin to go to and
faced a grim future as an orphan alone in the world. Fortunately, Dunstan Coll was aware of Tholos woodland skills and
took him on as an apprentice. The life
of a huntsman is full of danger. One
day Dunstan Coll met his match and was mortally mauled by a giant bear. Lady Emilee instantly promoted Tholos to take
the huntsman’s position. But Tholos did
not seem to take his duties seriously.
He spent much of his time visiting the remote reaches of the
territory. Rumors reached Lady Emilee
that Tholos was somehow involved in several incidents of witch burning,
something that was certainly not proper for the Lady’s huntsman to be involved
in. Recently, the Lady Emilee hosted an
elaborate feast for another powerful lord, but was embarrassed that the table
ran out of wild game. In a fit of rage
she banished Tholos from her lands.
With all the possessions that he could carry Tholos headed south for
Corsica City where surely he could find a noble in need of a huntsman. For a month he searched for a position
without luck. Tholos soon realized that
his resources would not last for much longer.
At last he entered “The World Famous Rockbottom Inn” to think about his
options and saw a sailor posting a notice looking for men with fighting
experience. Certainly this job was a better option than starving........
Other
Experience:
March
25, 1401: arrive in Corsica City
April
1401: “Marine” in employ of Golgis.
Find a dragon’s body and dead hero on an island. Encounter with pirates and a ship full of
the undead. Discharged April 27, 1401.
May
1401: 1 month building stone fences.
June
8 - June 18: employment by Esmerelda Saratola to kill giant rats ends in
servitude. Attacked by giant ants. Partial collapse of the Saratola house in to
an underlying cave. Almost killed by
the giant ants. Recovered at Selevar’s
place.
June
1401: Tholos meets a quirky old man named Xantaraim. He's a naturalist at the Temple of Apollo. For tending to his gardens he lets you live
in a campus flat and teaches you about nature.
The man is an unkempt "intellectual". The job doesn't actually pay. You get
housing and education, but no living money.
The Temple is in a crowded part of town. The quirky old man rattles on about herbs and spices and has you
tending to a garden at his hovel. During
the couple weeks that Xantaraim has been teaching Tholos, he has taught the
identities of several major herb families, theory on why there are seasons, the
types of clouds and types of rocks and minerals. In passing he mentioned an interesting theory: that the ground
beneath Corsica is porous and that caves abound in the area that are filled
with water.
July
2, 1401: Begin exploration of local caves.
Discover a strange ghostly image of two men fighting, wall paintings of
Corsican landscape from ancient times, and an entrance to a deeper cavern. The cavern is inhabited by a society of
mushroom people at war with a tribe of subterranean orcs. Attacked by animated rocks and a strange
Elvis creature on way to the caves.
Strange stone altar located on hillside above the caves. In caverns attacked by Carrion Crawler,
Phantom Fungus, and Darkmantle.
July
11, 1401: Meet with Lady Saratola regarding return of a scroll.
July 12, 1401: Begin training with a man named Tanin Vor, a Hunter of Men. Training commenced at dawn at a place on the beach at some weird modern art building. In back of the building, on the beach, was a training ground with climbing walls, box rings, training equipment, like something out of a Ninja movie. The regimen included push ups, sit ups, running, etc. all day, with few breaks as well as training in kick boxing techniques, wall climbing, running obstacle courses and learning how to jimmy a lock.
August
11, 1401: Tholos ends his training with Tanin.
Returned to the Saratola Estate.
The scroll/map we returned to her revealed underground rooms from a
villa buried during an ancient earthquake.
The current estate was built atop this ancient structure after the
earthquake. The workers were attacked
by a giant shelled squid. Jevicca,
Lucius, and I entered the subterranean structure to battle the squid. With the help of Jacimo we were able to kill
it but not before it almost killed me.
An accident with a brazier released a ghoul and started a cave in which
destroyed the remainder of the Estate.
In the debris Jevicca finds an evil being trapped inside of a glass bell
jar. The High Priest of Zeus arrived and
declared that it is an Artifact of a Major Devil, Dispatcher Himself.
August 13, 1401: Tholos receives a message from Rowanna by carrier crow,
lamenting that their friend Helena has died of a curse. She alleges that the
curse has befallen the entire countryside around Thogast. She requests that he
return to his job as a witch hunter.
August 15,
1401:Begin journey up Hadrites River accompanying Parmenion, Santorini’s agent,
to protect cargo and investigation strange and bloody happenings in the Demon’s
Triangle. Next evening battle with
Bugbears.
